about

“I did it, I finally have to admit it” so sang Adam John Miller on an early, early song “Somewhere Like Africa”. Ok, it may not have been that song and that might not have been been the lyric but it takes me where I want to go - kind of like Adam does to his own music.

So anyway, I stole Adam from a friend. They were in an (admittedly terrible) band together. I suggested, oh so subtly, and behind my friend’s back, that me and he (he being Adam) should form a Neutral Milk Hotel covers band together. Thus began a decade of makin’ musi’ togethe’.

But then, this isn’t mine and Adam’s story, or even the story of Adam’s biggest success, but of Adam John Miller as Adam John Miller. Not as Adam Trout. Not as the bassist from The MLS. Not as Mr Medusa Snare. Nope just as Adam John Miller.

I often thought about Adam as an outsider musician but that falls apart when you realise a) Adam has a deep love of outsider music and b) Adam’s actually excellent musicianship. Where it seems more apt is the cast of characters and things that recur obsessively in Adam’s off kilter lyrics. Wolves, ice cream, Sweden, monsters, the act of telling a story... these have all threaded in and out of AJ’s work throughout the years.

These are songs recorded between 2005 - 2007. I think they show peak one side of Adam, one that has receded as he got noisier, more aggressive and more on the front of Pitchfork. Call it twee, if you want, but it’s pretty fucking dark.

Two things (amongst many) these songs remind me of:

1.Waking up at 3 AM in my girlfriend of the time’s house. My sinuses trying to explode out of my head. All I could think about was The Day The Axe Died. (the actual day was pretty sad). Reports of my sinuses death were exaggerated.

2.Osaka, Japan. Around me “up and coming” Japanese groups, girl bands, solo artists were busking. I ignored them and instead was listening to Robert Anton Wilson intone over Adam’s frantic instrumental “The Dolphin Hotel”. It made sense.

If you listen carefully you actually hear Adam’s life story up to the end of 2007 right here. You just need the metaphorical keys to unlock it. You don’t need them though. Just enjoy it.

P.S. I think I have heard more AJM songs than anyone alive apart from the man himself. Make of that what you will.
